US PGA Championship 2024: Who is in the field?

There’ll be no asterisks next to the winner’s name of the US PGA Championship as Talor Gooch accepts his invite to join the star-studded field at the second men’s Major Championship of the season

Brooks Koepka arrives at Valhalla Golf Club bidding to defend his US PGA Championship title and become just the second player in history to lift the Wanamaker Trophy in successive years on two separate occasions. Tiger Woods is the only man to achieve that feat, winning in 1999 & 2000 and again in 2006 & 2007.

Brooks Koepka won by two shots at Oak Hill to win his third PGA Championship.

The Smash GC Captain won his first of three US PGA Championships in 2018 at Bellerive Country Club, the following year he retained his crown by winning the 2019 US PGA Championship at Bethpage Black. When the American won his fifth Major Championship and third US PGA Championship last year at Oak Hill Country Club he became the first golfer from the LIV Golf Tour to win a Major. Could Koepka defend his title once more?

The US PGA Championship proudly boasts having the most competitive field in golf, featuring past champions and the current best golfers in the world from the PGA Tour, LIV Golf, and the DP World Tour. This year could prove to be one of the most difficult US PGA Championships to win in recent times – no, not just because Talor Gooch is in the field – because there aren’t many big names missing from the field.

The field consists of 33 Major Champions and 16 US PGA Champions. All of the players from the most recently played Ryder Cup are playing at Valhalla Golf Club. As is tradition, the top 20 finishers from the 2024 PGA Professional Championship have also received an invite.

Rory McIlroy is hoping to repeat his 2014 US PGA victory at Valhalla when it returns to the venue this year and Andrew 'Beef' Johnston is backing him to end his Major drought.

Rory McIlroy was the last US PGA Champion when this event was held at Valhalla Golf Club ten years ago in 2014. Could Rory finally add a fifth Major to his resumé? No winners of the Zurich Classic – since the team format began in 2017 – had won on Tour again that season, until Rory this season won the Wells Fargo Championship. Before this season, the Zurich Classic curse seemed legit, however, who else would it be to break the curse than Rory McIlroy! I’m sure the 2014 US PGA Champion will be hoping to win his first Major in ten years and finally add a fifth. If Shane Lowry goes on to lift the Wanamaker after 72 holes at Valhalla Golf Club he’ll have Rory to thank in his speech for breaking the Zurich Classic curse.

The Block party returns to the US PGA Championship and there’ll be a boatload of fans rooting for Michael Block to recreate his heroic performance at Oak Hill Country Club last season. The club professional at Arroyo Trabuco Golf Club stormed into our top 100 most influential people in golf of 2023 and a strong showing at the 2024 US PGA Championship could see him retain his place in the list at the end of this year. If he makes another slam-dunk ace that might just do it!

Are any big names going to be missing at the US PGA Championship?

Perhaps the biggest names missing from the 2024 US PGA Championship are Sergio Garcia, Marc Leishman, Graeme McDowell, Louis Oosthuizen, Mito Pereira, Thomas Pieters, Ian Poulter, Henrik Stenson, Bubba Watson, Lee Westwood, and Matt Wolff – all of whom play on LIV Golf and haven’t met any of the entry requirements or received an invitation, apart from Louis Oosthuizen, who did receive an invitation but declined the invite due to “personal commitments”, according to his manager.

The most high-profile golfer missing from the PGA Tour is most likely the 2023 US Ryder Cup Team Captain, Zach Johnson. Sadly, fan favorite Joel Dahmen isn’t one of the 156 golfers teeing it up either, his last hope was winning the Myrtle Beach Classic won by Chris Gotterup. One of the biggest stars on the DP World Tour, Yannik Paul, also won’t be making his way to Valhalla Golf Club for the 2024 US PGA Championship.

Scottie Scheffler wins the 2024 Masters Tournament.

One important name that won’t be missing from the final 156 names on the tee sheet come Thursday, May 16 is Scottie Scheffler. The World No.1 announced on Instagram that his wife, Meredith, has given birth to perhaps the most anticipated baby in golf history, freeing the most dominant player in the men’s game to play at Valhalla Golf Club.

All 156 players have been confirmed for the 2024 US PGA Championship following the conclusion of the Wells Fargo Championship and the Myrtle Beach Classic. After winning his first PGA Tour event on his 27th start at the Myrtle Beach Clasic, Chris Gotterup earned one of the final two spots remaining.

Rory McIlroy won his fourth Wells Fargo Championship to break the Zurich Classic curse and deny anyone in the field a chance of playing at Valhalla Golf Club. The final place in the field has been awarded to the first alternate, Doug Ghim, rounding at the 156 players all bidding to lift the Wanamaker Trophy on Sunday.

The 2024 US PGA Championship is being hosted at Valhalla Golf Club

Collin Morikawa's prizes for winning the 2020 US Open Championship

How much will the US PGA Championship field be playing for in 2024?

The 2024 US PGA Championship purse hasn’t been announced as of yet but it is expected to rise from 2023 and could reach $20m. In 2023 the purse saw a near 50% increase from 2022 when the field was playing for a share of $12m.

The US PGA Champion receives a whole host of prizes, including the famous Wanamaker Trophy and a life exemption to play in all future US PGA Championships, the winner of this year’s tournament could be awarded a record-breaking amount for this tournament – even more than the $3.15m won by Brooks Koepka at last seasons US PGA Championship.

Who is the favorite to win the US PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club?

World number one Scottie Scheffler is the favorite at 4/1, hardly surprising considering he’s already won four times on Tour this season including the Masters. Rory McIlroy is the second favorite with the bookmakers at 11/1 and Jon Rahm is the third favorite at 14/1 (correct at 11 am GMT on May 8, 2024).
