Who we are, what we do, and why we do it
Today’s Golfer has been one of the foremost voices in golf since its inception in 1988. For more than 35 years and 440 issues, the magazine has given golfers the latest news, equipment tests and reviews, big-name interviews, tips from coaches and tour pros, plus peerless golf course reviews and rankings.
Our ethos has always been to help you play better golf, buy better equipment, and choose the best places to play.
The website launched more than two decades ago and has enabled us to offer readers even more content, with the added benefit of immediacy. Today, more than five million people across the globe rely on us for the latest information on golf equipment, courses, tour news, and more.
Meet the team
Chris worked in newspapers, and for Bird Watching and Motor Cycle News before joining Today’s Golfer in 2005. He became the editor of Golf World in 2007, building its audience and enhancing its reputation throughout Europe, and also edited Golf Illustrated, before returning to edit Today’s Golfer in 2013.
Since then, Chris has taken Today’s Golfer to new levels of success, maintaining its place at the top of Britain’s golf magazine sales and increasing market share over its rivals. In 2020 he oversaw the merging of the magazine with Golf World, placing particular emphasis on the revered Top 100 Golf Courses and Resorts rankings.
Chris lives in Cambridgeshire and has been a member of a number of the county’s courses, including Elton Furze and Peterborough Milton. He has also played a huge number of the world’s best courses, from Turnberry to TPC Sawgrass.
Playing off a 12-handicap, Chris is a classic amateur golfer, capable of both the sublime and the ridiculous. A long hitter, he prefers the bomb and gouge method to the shorter fairway finder.
Rob is the Digital Editor of todays-golfer.com. He specializes in the DP World Tour, PGA Tour, LIV Golf, and the Ryder Cup Cup, spending large chunks of his days reading about, writing about, and watching the tours.
He’s passionate about the equipment used by professional golfers and is also a font of knowledge when it comes to golf balls, golf trolleys, and golf bags, testing thousands down the years.
Rob has been a journalist for more than 23 years and joined Bauer Media in September 2010, working as the Senior Production Editor of Today’s Golfer and Golf World magazines for ten years before moving into the Digital Editor role in July 2020. He was then shortlisted for New Editor of the Year by the British Society of Magazine Editors.
During his time in the golf industry, Rob has interviewed and played golf with some of the biggest names in the game, including Rory McIlroy, Shane Lowry, Lee Westwood, Colin Montgomerie, and Rick Shiels. He’s traveled the world attending product launches and golf events and reported at both The Open and Ryder Cup.
He has been playing golf for almost three decades and is a member at Greetham Valley in Rutland and Spalding Golf Club in Lincolnshire, playing off a 9.7 handicap.
Simon Daddow – Equipment Editor
Having tested and played more than 10,000 clubs in his life, what Simon doesn’t know about golf clubs isn’t worth knowing.
He spent a large part of his career as a golf club maker and product development manager, and has worked in the golf industry for more than 30 years. Starting out as trainee professional at Downes Crediton GC where he learned the art of golf club making, he went on to work for Clubhaus Plc and Tony Charles Ltd as a golf club maker, and running Product Development at Benross Golf. Simon also spent time working as a Sales Executive in Harrods’ golf department.
He joined EMAP Active (now Bauer Media) as Equipment Editor in 2006 and has worked for both Today’s Golfer and Golf World. Working alongside our test pro Neil Wain, Simon has made todays-golfer.com the most reliable source for golf club testing. Simon was previously nominated for Specialist Writer by the Professional Publishers Association.
Simon has played golf for more than 40 years and plays to a handicap of 10. A lack of club speed means he’s short off the tee, but very handy from 125 yards and in. Simon’s job means he plays regularly around the world, and rates Kingsbarns as his favorite course.
Michael Catling – Features Editor
Michael is an award-winning journalist who specializes in golf’s Majors and Tours, including DP World, PGA, LPGA, and LIV.
Michael joined Today’s Golfer in 2016 and has traveled the world to attend the game’s biggest events and secure exclusive interviews with dozens of Major champions, including Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, Gary Player, Greg Norman, Jon Rahm, Jordan Spieth, and Justin Thomas.
A former member of Ufford Park and Burghley Park, Michael has been playing golf since he was 11 and currently plays off a handicap of 10.
Chris Bertram – Top 100 Courses & Resorts Editor
Chris has been a sports journalist since 1996, initially as a junior writer with National Club Golfer magazine. Chris then spent four years writing about football and rugby union for the Press Association but returned to be Editor and then Publisher of NCG before joining Golf World and Today’s Golfer as Senior Production Editor.
He has been freelance since 2010 and when he is not playing and writing about the world’s finest golf courses, he works for BBC Sport.
A keen all-round sportsman, Chris plays off 11 – which could be a little better if it wasn’t for hilariously poor lag putting which has to be seen to be believed.
Rob McGarr – Contributing Editor
Rob has been a writer and editor for over 15 years, covering all manner of subjects for leading magazines and websites.
He has previously been Features Editor of Today’s Golfer magazine and Digital Editor of todays-golfer.com, and held roles at FHM, Men’s Running, Golf World, and MAN Magazine.
You can follow him on YouTube where – depending on what day of the week it is – he’ll either be trying his best to get his handicap down to scratch or shoving his clubs in a cupboard, never to be seen again.
Rob is a member at Royal North Devon, England’s oldest golf club, where he plays off a three-handicap.
Will Shreeve-Peacock – Golf Equipment Writer
Will is an expert in golf shoes, GPS watches, rangefinders, and training aids.
He has a degree in journalism from Sheffield Hallam university and four years’ experience working in golf retail with American Golf.
Trained by a range of manufacturers, including Titleist and TaylorMade, to enhance his product knowledge, Will has all of the skills required to recommend the perfect equipment for amateur golfers.
Will started playing golf more than a decade ago at Thorney Lakes Golf Club, Cambridgeshire, and is now a member at Burghley Park Golf Club in Stamford, Lincolnshire. His handicap index is 5.8, largely thanks to his scratch-standard short game.
Ross Tugwood – Golf Equipment Writer
Ross specializes in data, analytics, science and innovation. He’s also an expert in golf apparel and has a keen interest in sustainability.
Ross is passionate about optimizing sports performance and has a decade of experience working with professional athletes and coaches for British Athletics, the UK Sports Institute, and Team GB.
He has post-graduate degrees in Performance Analysis and Sports Journalism, enabling him to critically analyze and review the latest golf equipment and technology to help you make better-informed buying decisions.
Ross is a member of Porthmadog Golf Club with a handicap index of 13.8.
James Hogg – Golf Equipment Writer
James has a degree in English Language from Newcastle University and an MA in Journalism from Kingston University.
James previously worked for American Golf alongside his studies as part of the sales and fitting team. Having worked in golf retail for seven years he has all the skills and knowledge necessary to review and recommend the perfect equipment for golfers of all abilities and has a strong knowledge of putters, golf balls, and apparel.
Despite nobody else in James’ family playing golf he took a keen interest as a teenager which saw him become a junior member at Saltburn Golf Club, North Yorkshire. Since returning to Teesside in 2022 James has joined his home course, Cleveland Golf Club. His handicap index is 4.7 thanks to consistent distance off the tee.
Duncan Lennard – Contributing Editor
Duncan Lennard is a freelance golf writer who produces the majority of Today’s Golfer’s golf instruction content.
He began his career as a staff writer for Fore! magazine in 1995, before moving to Golf World in 1998 and Today’s Golfer in 2003. Turning freelance in 2005, he authored the best-selling Extreme Golf and its follow-up 112 Miles to the Pin. He has also edited publications for a range of leading golf coaches including Scott Cranfield and Karl Morris.
Duncan is 51, lives in Exeter, Devon and is a member at Exminster GC, playing off a 6 handicap. He has mastered a wide range of golf shots, none of which send the ball in its intended direction.
Iona is a former professional golfer, who has played on the Ladies European Tour, and is now a highly-respected golf broadcaster.
She joined Today’s Golfer as a regular contributor in 2023 and offers insight into the professional game from her life working on the world’s biggest tours.
Stephen’s career has seen her work for Sky Sports Golf, CBS, the BBC, and NBC Golf Channel, covering everything from The Masters and The Open, to the Ryder Cup and Solheim Cup. She has also hosted prize presentations to a global audience at some of the DP World Tour’s flagship events.
Alongside her television work, Stephen also has her own YouTube channel – On The Road With Iona – which has welcomed guests including Jon Rahm, Niall Horan, Rick Shiels, Bronte Law, and Martin Slumbers.
She is also the first-ever female on-course commentator in EA Sports gaming history and can be heard on PGA Tour Road to The Masters.
John is an Edinburgh Comedy Award-winning stand-up comedian and golf fanatic, playing off a 14 handicap at Wycombe Heights Golf Club.
He co-hosts the Beef’s Golf Club podcast with Tour pro Andrew ‘Beef’ Johnston and has interviewed some of the biggest names in the games, including Sir Nick Faldo, Luke Donald, Tony Finau, and Lydia Ko.
Robins is one-half of hit YouTube channel Bad Golf alongside fellow comic Alex Horne, with the pair playing each other across a series of matches and courses every season and welcoming guests, including Rick Shiels, to their channel.
By day, Robins hosts the Elis James and John Robins show and How Do You Cope on BBC Radio 5Live, the Moon Under Water podcast on BBC Sounds and appears as a superfan on The Queen Podcast
Andrew ‘Beef’ Johnston – Columnist
Andrew Johnston, better known as ‘Beef’, is a professional golfer on the DP World Tour, and has played on the PGA Tour and in three of the four men’s Majors.
Beef took up golf after playing pitch and putt as a child and started his golfing journey at North Middlesex Golf Club, which remains his home club.
The Englishman, who won the Real Club Valderrama Open de España in 2016, turned pro in 2009 after a successful amateur career, which saw him represent England boys and the Great Britain and Ireland team in the Jacques Léglise Trophy. He worked his way through the Jamega, EuroPro and Challenge Tours before gaining his DP World Tour card for the first time in 2012 and his PGA Tour in 2017.
The 34-year-old has his own YouTube channel and is the owner and co-host of the hit Beef’s Golf Club podcast alongside fellow Today’s Golfer contributor John Robins. He’s also tried his hand in the commentary booth and in front of the cameras at both The Open and the Ryder Cup in 2023 while recovering from a long-term hand injury.
A huge fan favorite, Beef is due to return to action in South Africa at the start of the 2024 DP World Tour season and has set himself the target of qualifying for the European Ryder Cup team for the next match in New York in 2025.
Matt has been a golf journalist for 15 years and worked for, among others, Golf365, SkySports, ESPN, NBC, Sporting Life, Open.com and the Guardian. He specializes in feature writing, reporting and tournament analysis.
He’s traveled widely in that time, covering golf from Kazakhstan to South Korea via Seychelles, Sri Lanka and Nepal. More straightforwardly, he’s also covered numerous Majors, Ryder Cups and Solheim Cups.
Neil is a PGA Professional and custom fitting expert who coaches at the Keele Golf Centre in Newcastle. He also shares tips with his 14,000 followers on Instagram.
An elite player, Neil has competed in numerous PGA events, securing wins at the Oxley Park Golf Club Pro Am and Keddleston Park Golf Club Pro Am, and holds several course records.
Neil’s fast swing speed and consistent ball-striking, combined with his extensive knowledge of equipment, makes him a key part of our golf club tests.
How we test and review products
For more than three decades, Today’s Golfer has been testing and comparing all the latest and greatest equipment in golf. Today, thanks to advances in technology, our testing protocol is more detailed and reliable than ever before.
We’ve written a detailed explanation of how Today’s Golfer tests golf equipment, but in short, we test clubs on a launch monitor in a controlled environment in order to produce reliable, comparable data. Much of the testing is done by TG test pro Neil Wain, alongside Equipment Editor Simon Daddow, though other members of the team also test and review clubs. We sometimes use readers to test equipment, too, as this enables us to get an even wider array of opinions from golfers with different handicap levels. For our golf balls test, we use a £250,000 swing robot in order to produce ultra-consistent speed and strike, removing all the variables you get with human testing.
For all other products, TG team members will test them on the golf course multiple times and in different conditions to get a true representation of the performance, including all strengths and weaknesses.
Having tested tens of thousands of products over the years, we know exactly what to look for, and will ask every possible question of each product we review. Whether that’s using an umbrella on a windy day, a laser rangefinder in the fog, or testing shoes in slippery conditions, you can rest assured that if it’s a situation that can arise for you on the golf course, we’ve already put the product through that scenario before recommending it.
