What’s In The Bag: Lexi Thompson

Today’s Golfer dives into the bag of serial LPGA Tour winner Lexi Thompson

Jump To: Thompson’s WITB

It’s very hard to believe that Lexi Thompson is only 28 years old, it feels like she’s been playing golf at the top level for decades – this is a testament to her exceptional skill and ability. With 84 top 10s and 11 career victories on the LPGA Tour alone, it’s not surprising that Thompson was part of the 2023 USA Solheim Cup Team despite a run of bad form.

Today's Golfer What's In The Bag is brought to you in association with Callaway Chrome Tour and Chrome Tour X golf balls.

Thompson is the most experienced member of the USA Team having appeared in the Solheim Cup on every occasion since 2013 (this will be her 6th appearance). The American succeeded with Team USA in 2015 and 2017.

Lexi Thompson tasted success in the Solheim Cup in 2015 and 2017

There’s no hiding from the fact that 2023 hasn’t been the best season of Thompson’s stellar career but she still performed well enough to earn a spot at the Solheim Cup. Excluding 2023, the Floridian-born golfer has a proven track record of winning and contending right down to the wire.

It’s been a long time since 12-year-old Lexi Thompson burst onto the scene at the 2007 US Women’s Open, but at that point, everyone knew they were watching a superstar in the making. Fast forward 16 years and many of her dreams will have been fulfilled and she has a career to be proud of – and build on.

Thompson’s latest victory came back in October 2022, at the Aramco Team Series event in New York. She won that day by three strokes over Canadian Brooke Henderson and Swedish Madelene Sagstrom. After knocking on the day most of the season on the LPGA Tour, the American finally had her win on the LET (Ladies European Tour).

When the Cobra Puma athlete turned pro as a 15-year-old in 2010 there will have been hope of becoming a Major Champion, but she may not have expected it to happen as quickly as it did. In 2014, at the age of 19, Thompson became a Major Champion when she emerged victorious at the Kraft Nabisco Championship (Chevron Championship), beating fellow American, Michelle Wie, by three strokes.

Unfortunately, Thompson has never been able to replicate her Major victory but she’s hit the woodwork in every Major on the calendar, surely it’s only a matter of time before she adds another one to her résumé.

Being a Cobra Puma athlete, the majority of Thompson’s bag is comprised of Cobra equipment, but what models does the Floridian elect to use?

What’s In The Bag: Lexi Thompson

What driver does Lexi Thompson use?

<meta charset="utf-8">Lexi Thompson uses a Cobra RadSpeed Driver (9°) with a Fujikura Ventus Black shaft

Lexi Thompson is notorious for being explosive off the tee. So much so, that when she swings her feet lift off the ground. Thompson has played around with drivers over the last couple of years and she's surprisingly settled on the Cobra RadSpeed. The RadSpeed was released in 2021, and it wasn't the most popular driver, but who'd argue with the 14th-longest hitter on the LPGA Tour this season?

What fairway wood does Lexi Thompson use?

<meta charset="utf-8">Lexi Thompson uses a Cobra King LTD Lexi Blue (12.5°) with a Graphite Design Tour AD GP-6 Stiff shaft

Price: £269.00 / $329.99 RRP
This is another old model that Thompson trusts off the tee and in the fairway. The LTD was released way back in 2016. Since then it hasn't been a permanent fixture in Thompson's bag, but it is in there most of the time. The American is known for leaning on her fairway wood quite regularly so she definitely wants one she's confident using.

With this model being so old, Cobra no longer manufactures this product but you can pick up their newest Aerojet fairway wood.

What utility does Lexi Thompson use?

Lexi Thompson has added a Cobra King TEC Utility (17°) with a Project X Rifle 5.0 shaft

Price: £189.00 / $229.99 RRP
This is the newest addition to the 28-year-old's bag. However, she does switch it up with a Srixon Z U85 on occasion. Thompson says she's not a big fan of hybrids, so a utility iron is brilliant for her to bridge the gap between her wood and irons.

What irons does Lexi Thompson use?

Lexi Thompson has a full set of Cobra S2 Forged Irons (4-PW) with Project X <meta charset="utf-8">Rifle 5.0 shafts

Price: £1,099.00 / $ 1,299.00 RRP
With all of the newest Cobra models at her disposal, surely Thompson has one of the latest Cobra irons in her bag - no! The Floridian's irons are from the same year she turned professional - 2010. She's clearly never found a reason to replace her irons, or nothing is an improvement on technology from 2010?

Cobra S2 Forged irons aren't majorly unforgiving or hard to hit, they are a very middle-of-the-road club head. Let this be a message that just because you can swap equipment doesn't always mean you should. Unfortunately, you won't be able to go out and buy a set of these but Cobra's newest irons, King Tours, are very similar.

What wedges does Lexi Thompson use?

Lexi Thompson has three Cobra King Wedges (51°, 55°, and 59°) with True Temper Dynamic Gold S200 shafts

Price: £129.99 / $159.00 RRP
Another model from 2016 in Thompson's bag - must have been a good year for Cobra equipment. Thompson has three wedges at odd numbers, some have been bent to achieve the loft. They have been bent to transition perfectly with her irons. This is a common setup for Thompson and she doesn't tend to play about with wedges too often. Hence she has clubs from 2016.

Once again, Thompson is using clubs that have been discontinued and can no longer be purchased. However, the new Cobra Snakebite Wedges are excellent and well worth going for instead.

What putter does Lexi Thompson use?

Lexi Thompson plays with a Titleist Scotty Cameron GoLo N5 Putter

Price: £429.00 / $449.99 RRP
No Cobra putter? Thompson has had many issues in recent years on the putting green, and she has taken some time to settle on a putter. She's finally done so with the Titleist Scotty Cameron GoLo N5 putter. Hopefully, the American's putting will improve heading into the Solheim Cup and 2024.

If you want the same putter as Lexi Thompson, unfortunately, you can't! Her putter has been discontinued and the model is no longer in production. The nearest putter to the Americans is the Scotty Cameron Super Select GoLo 6.

What golf balls does Lexi Thompson use?

Lexi Thompson plays with Maxfli Tour Golf Balls

Lexi Thompson becomes the first professional golfer to play with Maxfli Tour golf balls. The American has ended her long-time contract with Bridgestone in order to play with Maxfli golf balls. Thompson announced the switch by saying they give her more confidence around the greens and more distance off the tee - why not give them a go yourself?
